Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

3 1/2 out of 5 stars

Don’t worry. Everything good you heard about Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol (MIGP) is true. Tom Cruise still has it, and expect a couple few more before this guy turns sixty.

The Good: With J.J. Abrams producing and Pixar’s Brad Bird directing, MIGP is destined to succeed. The result is a slick, modern and grittier installment in the MI franchise. MIGP retained the human quality they injected to Ethan Hunt’s character in MI3, when J.J. Abrams took over the franchise. What’s not to like? The best locations, the hottest and coolest gadgets, a car that would make James Bond green with envy…  that Burj Khalifa sequence that Tom Cruise personally performed will drive you to the edge of your seat. This might as well be the most fun action movie I’ve seen a while, since they gave Simon Pegg a bigger role in this one.

The Bad: Where the hell was Maggie Q? Jonathan Rhys Meyers? Monica Monaghan? MI3 nailed the casting part. I wouldn’t say MIGP did it. Jeremy Renner delivers, but the old team, was much better performing… and looking, at that. Yes, I was happy that Lost’s Josh Holloway was in MIGP but they didn’t exactly give his character much flesh. Should they have cast the old gang, I would give MIGP four stars.
